Improv of Ellen Bryant Voigt Amaryllis

Having been a farmer’s daughter
I knew beauty, looking out into open fields
running with the horses, almost breaking my leg.
I pruned vegetables and churned butter
until it was moistened cream and then spread it across bread.
My life had little significance, but it meant more
than most. I didn't want more than what I hid.
Material things and frigid people never bothered me.
